The International Institute for Middle East and Balkan Studies (IFIMES)[1], based in Ljubljana, Slovenia, regularly monitors geopolitical developments in the Middle East, the Balkans and the broader international arena. The contemporary world is facing multiple crises – security, energy, economic and institutional – that require a considered and long-term approach. Short-term strategies and partial solutions can no longer ensure stability or predictability. Against this backdrop, the Strategic Vision Platform represents an initiative aimed at defining the key stabilising points of the future global order, grounded in partnership, security, energy sustainability and institutional development. Its purpose is to offer a long-term perspective and concrete models of cooperation that support lasting peace, prosperity and global balance. In this regard, IFIMES is exclusively publishing an article by Bogoljub J. Karić, a prominent philanthropist, visionary and inspirational figure, in which he outlines his Strategic Vision Platform in the framework of the new global order. The article, entitled “Strategic Vision Platform: security, energy and global stability as the foundations of the future world order”, offers a fresh perspective for Serbia and the Balkans as active and relevant actors in shaping future global trends.
The modern world is entering a period of profound structural change, characterised by the convergence of security, energy, economic and institutional crises. In such an environment, short-term fixes and piecemeal political responses are increasingly ineffective. What is needed is a new strategic framework that moves beyond day-to-day politics and provides a long-term vision for stability, development and global balance.
This Strategic Vision Platform rests on the conviction that any future world order must be anchored in clearly defined stabilising points, responsible partnerships, and sustainable models of security and energy.
Historical experience shows that the United States has played a pivotal role in shaping stable regional and global systems. Strategic partnerships with Japan, Germany, Israel and Australia have demonstrated that the combination of security, economic development and technological progress generates long-term stability and predictability.
In the current international environment, the United States possesses the capacity to reclaim its role as a leader and guarantor of global balance – not through dominance, but through the stewardship of systems of strategic importance to humanity: energy, security and industrial development.
The Arctic, with Greenland at its core, represents one of the key pillars of the future global architecture. Its geographical position between North America and Europe, combined with the growing importance of Arctic resources, makes it a potential centre of a new energy, industrial and societal infrastructure.
From a long-term perspective, Greenland could be developed as a central hub for the intake, processing and distribution of oil and gas destined for the European Union, the United States and partner countries. In cooperation with the United States, European partners and the Russian Federation, consideration should be given to the construction of specialised Arctic and subsea pipelines that would enable the safe, controlled and sustained transport of energy resources from the Arctic and Siberian basin to Greenland, and subsequently to European and global markets. Such a system would safeguard the West’s energy security, price stability and supply predictability, while ensuring the strategic leadership of the United States in the management and protection of this infrastructure.
This vision also carries a strong social dimension. The energy and industrial development of Greenland implies the inclusion of the local population as active participants in the global economy – through industry, investment and education. The creation of new employment opportunities, the improvement of living standards and the establishment of long-term prospects would draw in expertise, capital, and new residents. In this manner, Greenland could become one of the most attractive territories for living, work and technological advancement in the 21st and 22nd centuries.
Against the backdrop of ongoing global processes, the Western Balkans remains a region of strategic importance for Europe’s security. With the adoption of the Western Balkans Democracy and Prosperity Act by the United States Congress, the region has been formally defined as an area of long-term national and strategic interest for the United States.
Within this framework, the Republic of Serbia emerges as the central stabilising factor in the Balkans. Its geographical position, infrastructural connectivity and political leverage allow it to play a key role in preserving regional stability. The sustained stability of Serbia directly translates into the stability of the entire region, preventing new conflicts, divisions and security escalations.
Through a strategic partnership with the United States, Serbia has the potential to become a key platform for curbing regional corruption, dismantling organised crime and transnational networks, and monitoring illicit financial flows and drug trafficking routes. These efforts should unfold through institutional channels – grounded in the rule of law, system-building and a security architecture based on partnership rather than force.
Such an approach simultaneously lays the groundwork for stronger democratic institutions, an independent judiciary and responsible governance. In this sense, democracy is not viewed as an ideological objective, but as a functional instrument for ensuring stability, security and economic development.
The Strategic Vision Platform represents a model of global cooperation based on partnership, security and long-term development:
This initiative is not directed against any actor. Its core objective is the creation of lasting peace, stability and prosperity within the global community.
