Panel "Special features of security in the region"

LJUBLJANA / ZAGREB, April 29 2015 - Director of the International Institute for Middle-East and Balkan Studies (IFIMES) Bakhatyar Aljaf participated at the international conference "Development of democracy", which was held in Zagreb from 28 to 29 April 2015. The conference was organized by the Centre for Democracy and Technology, Institute of New magazine from Ljubljana, and by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy. Topics for discussion were the understanding of the development of democracy in different environments, the impact of democracy on various economic areas, and examples of positive practices of security as a guarantee for democracy, stability, and coexistence of identities. Director Aljaf participated in the panel "The specific character of security in the region", which was attended by:

  • prof. dr. Mihael Brejc, director of the Center for Democracy and Technology;
  • Andrej Grošelj, Representative of the European Union (EU) in Bosnia and Herzegovina;
  • Bakhatyar Aljaf, Director of the IFIMES.

The intention of the panel was to present the Danube region (DR), which is economically and politically lagging behind older EU member states. Its development is limited due to historical, cultural, political, economic and religious context, and despite many initiatives for an economical break-through, there has been no visible progress. Due to its potential, DR is the space of the future, where it can serve as a bridge between Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. Bakhtyar Aljaf presented the paper entitled "The collapse of the Arab Spring, the birth of the ISIL, and the spread of radicalism in the Danube Region". Andrej Grošelj presented the report "Stabilization and Association process as an instrument of security in the region?”. During the panel an interesting discussion developed in which most of the participants took part. The conference was attended by scientists and experts from the region and from Taiwan.
