LJUBLJANA/FOJNICA, 30 June 2026 – The International Institute for Middle East and Balkan Studies (IFIMES), based in Ljubljana and holding Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN/ECOSOC) in New York, as well as serving as the publisher of the leading international scholarly journal on European integration, European Perspectives, held a formal ceremony to present the IFIMES Gold Medal to Bogić Bogićević, one of the most distinguished statesmen and public figures of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The IFIMES Gold Medal was presented to the laureate by the Honorary President of IFIMES, Stjepan Mesić, former President of the Republic of Croatia, in the presence of the Director of the International Institute, Prof. Dr. Zijad Bećirović. On this occasion, President Mesić highlighted that Bogić Bogićević, through his lifetime of public service and statesmanship, has become a symbol of political responsibility, moral integrity, and the steadfast promotion of the universal values of peace, democracy, dialogue, and mutual respect.
The ceremony was further honoured by the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro, Ervin Ibrahimović, the Mayor of the Municipality of Fojnica, Sabahudin Klisura, and the Director of the Health Resort "Reumal" Fojnica, Alija Mukača. Their attendance underscored the event's regional significance and reinforced its message of promoting dialogue, peace, cooperation, and mutual respect across the region.
The IFIMES Gold Medal was awarded to Bogić Bogićević in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the advancement of democratic values, the strengthening of mutual trust, and the promotion of the principles of a multiethnic and inclusive society in Bosnia and Herzegovina and across the wider region.
Throughout his decades of public service, Bogić Bogićević has been widely recognized as a symbol of principled leadership, moral integrity, and an unwavering commitment to peace, dialogue, and the European future of the Western Balkans. His historic refusal to endorse decisions that could have jeopardized peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the final years of the former common state remains one of the most compelling examples of moral courage, statesmanship, and personal integrity in the contemporary political history of Southeast Europe.
