LJUBLJANA, 20 May 2011 - Directors of the International Institute for Middle-East and Balkan Studies (IFIMES) from Ljubljana Bakhatyar Aljaf and Zijad Bećirović, today received the Ambassador of the State of Israel to the Republic of Slovenia Shmuel Meirom.

During the lengthy conversation they exchanged views of the current events in the Middle East and the Balkans and devoted special attention to the uncontrolled development of nuclear programme in some Middle East countries. Regarding the situation in the Balkans, IFIMES directors noted the problem of the Sandžak region which may become a new source of instability in the region unless the EU takes an active role in resolving this problem. The tensions in Sandžak could endanger the stability of Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo.

IFIMES directors also presented the activities of the Institute and new projects planned for this year, whereby stress will be laid on the activities in the field of fighting organised crime and corruption.

At the end IFIMES directors commended the Embassy of the State of Israel for its activities and co-operation which have contributed to strengthening the relations between the Republic of Slovenia and the State of Israel.
