UN - reactivation of multilateralism

on Monday, September 30, 2019, at 16.00 h

in Grand Hotel Union Business, hall "Orchid", Miklošičeva 3, Ljubljana.

The 74th Annual General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) is being held in New York these days. The International Institute for Middle East and Balkan Studies (IFIMES) has a special consultative status at the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the UN since 2018. This is why the Institute has decided to organize an international roundtable on the role, importance and reform of UN in the global world and reactivation of multilateralism in international relations.

The majority is of the opinion that the UN needs to be reformed in order to successfully follow all the changes. The question is how to reform, how to keep up with all the changes in the world and how to find solutions effectively. What is the role of bilateralism and multilateralism in international relations? The following guests will present their views on these important issues:

  • Budimir Lončar, last Minister of Foreign affairs of SFR Yugoslavia (1987-1991), Former Ambassador of the SFRY to Indonesia, Germany and the United States, former Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to the Non-Aligned Movement, former special adviser to two Croatian Presidents,
  • Prof. Dr. Ernest Petrič, former Slovene Ambassador to the UN, the first Slovene ambassador to the United States, former President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia, a member and former President of the International Commission on Legal Assistance (ILC),
  • Prof. Dr. Tvrtko Jakovina, historian, professor of the world history of the 20th century, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb.

The round table will be delivered in Slovene and Croatian and will be followed by a discussion with the guests moderated by Assist. Prof. Dr. Zijad Bećirović, Director of IFIMES.
