Current problems and challenges of Slovenian local and regional self-government

(What can we expect after the parliamentarian elections?)

The lecture will be held on Monday, 23 April 2018 at 15.00

in the “Grad” hall of Hotel Lev (13th floor) at Vošnjakova 1, Ljubljana.

Early elections are approaching in Slovenia on June 3, 2018. Due to changes in the social, political and economic spheres, in many EU countries, the process of transforming local communities is being carried out in order to more effectively resolve local and other public tasks; the starting point of this process is the connection between territorial changes with substantive issues and, in particular, good governance for the benefit of the population. The current Government of the Republic of Slovenia struggled a little on the issues of local and regional self-government. What can we expect in this area after the elections? It is more than obvious that Slovenia needs a continuation of the decentralization process - guidelines and agreement are needed at least in terms of functional decentralization, possibly also for the new territorial structure of local self-government. In short, we need a new Strategy for the development of local and regional self-government.

These and other issues will be discussed at the round table by:

• Prof. Dr. Albin Igličar, professor emeritus at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana,

• Prof. Dr. Ivan Kristan, professor emeritus at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana, the first president of the National Council of the Republic of Slovenia,

• Prof. Dr. Ciril Ribičič, professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana and former Constitutional Court Judge,
• Prof. Dr. Franc Grad, professor emeritus at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana, former Constitutional Court Judge,

• Assist. Prof. Dr. Miloš Senčur, Assistant Professor of Public Administration at the Faculty of Government and European Studies, New University, Secretary of the    Association of  City Municipalities of Slovenia.

The event will be in Slovene. After the lecture there will be a discussion moderated by Assist. Prof. Dr. Zijad Bećirović.
