THE REPUBLIC OF ALBANIA ON THE WAY TO THE EU

Mr. Ilir Meta,

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Albania.


The lecture will be held on Friday, 12 February 2010, at 16 h

in the Auditorium of Center Evropa at Dalmatinova 4 in Ljubljana



Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Albania Mr. Ilir Meta will present Albanian's foreign policy and its efforts to join the EU. He will present the future activities of Albanian foreign policy, with special emphasis on the EU. The prominent guest will also speak about the current issues of the country’s foreign policy.

Ilir Meta was born on March 24, 1969 in Albania. He graduated from Political Economy at the Faculty of Economics, University of Tirana in 1992, where he also pursued his postgraduate studies.

Ilir Meta has been engaged in politics since 1990 as an active participant in the students’ movement that brought political pluralism to Albania.

In November 1999, Ilir Meta became Prime Minister of the Republic of Albania and after the general parliamentary elections he won the second mandate, lasting from September 2001 until February 2002. During this period, Albania engaged in a range of important reforms, joining the Process of Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) with the EU.

As of 17 September 2009, Mr. Meta is Deputy-Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Albania. In the previous parliamentary legislature he held the Chairmanship of the Parliamentary Commission of European Integration.

Ilir Meta is the Leader of the Socialist Movement for Integration (LSI) founded in September 2004.

The lecture will be delivered in the English language.

The lecture will be followed by a discussion, moderated by

Zijad Bećirović and Bakhatyar Aljaf.
