entitled

10th anniversary of the European Parliament resolution on Srebrenica

which will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at 14.00,

at the hotel "Lev", 13th floor, "Grad" hall, Vošnjakova 1, Ljubljana.

The European Parliament (EP) adopted 10 years ago, more precisely on 15 January 2009, a resolution on Srebrenica. The resolution was then and still is very important, because the EP called on the EU Member States as well as the Western Balkan countries to mark 11 July as Srebrenica Memorial Day for the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica. At the same time the EP stressed in its resolution that it is necessary to remember and appropriately pay homage to all the victims of the crimes that were committed during the recent wars in the Balkans.

The draft text of the resolution on Srebrenica was officially handed over to the political group Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) in the EP in Brussels by the Association of Mothers of the Srebrenica and Žepa enclaves. The document was formally adopted by then the Vice-President of the EP, Diana Wallis, who, together with Jelko Kacin, also attended memorial ceremonies at the Potočari Memorial Center. MEP Jelko Kacin (ALDE), then the vice-president of the EP delegation for South East Europe, lead this project of conciliation and agreed the text with all the political groups, so the text was adopted with the support of all political groups in the EP.

At the round table guests will talk about the time of adoption of the resolution and what is the situation and attitude towards the victims 10 years later. In what faze is the reconciliation process and the cooperation process with the International Tribunal in The Hague (ICTY), now called the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT)? What are the expectations of the victims' relatives, what can the European Union do to ensure respect of human rights in the Western Balkans?

Guests of the round table will be:

  • Jelko Kacin, former Slovenian deputy in the European Parliament and then Vice-President of the EP delegation to South-Eastern Europe, co-author of the EP resolution on Srebrenica
